Don’t speak Italian? Automatic Italian–English translation

Meetings are held in Italian. If you speak English, in the Google Meet video call we can turn on automatic voice translation between Italian and English.

  • You need a computer: translation is not available from a phone.
  • The translated voice comes a few seconds late; translation lasts up to 90 minutes.
  • At the start we ask you to agree to have your voice translated.
  • It is an automatic tool and can make mistakes, especially with names, numbers and technical terms: if something is unclear, ask us to repeat. After the meeting you receive a written summary.
  • Phone and WhatsApp calls have no translation: on WhatsApp we send you the Meet link.
  • The meeting is not recorded.

Separation and divorce in Italy: the main routes

  • Consensual separation or divorce: the spouses agree on children, home and support. It can be done in court, through a lawyer-assisted negotiation, or, in some cases without minor children, before the civil registrar.
  • Judicial separation or divorce: when there is no agreement, the court decides on custody, child support, spousal support and the family home.
  • Time limits: in Italy divorce generally follows separation after a waiting period that is shorter for consensual cases. The exact rules and steps are checked on the specific case.

When spouses live in different countries

Which court has jurisdiction and which law applies depend on where the spouses live, their nationalities and where the proceedings are started. A divorce obtained abroad may be recognised in Italy, and an Italian divorce may need to be recorded in the civil registers of the country of residence. We examine these points before choosing the route, so as to avoid parallel proceedings in two countries.

What to prepare

  • Marriage certificate and, if any, marriage contract or property regime.
  • Children’s birth certificates and details of where they live.
  • Documents on income, property and bank accounts in Italy and abroad.
  • Any previous court orders or agreements.
